BENITO'S GLOBAL FRIENDS ZANZIBAR
To All my Dear Friends across the Globe,
53 Years have gone by since I left Paradise Zanzibar in 1964 and at long last I have decided to put together a website of my great life spent on the worlds best spice island Zanzibar, an Island just 54 miles from North to South and 24 miles from East to West.
Going through unlimited photographs at our time all Black & White where most of us had those little box cameras, how I ever ended up with so many photographs, I will never know and as such here I am scanning my photos to share with you all friends hoping you may pick up my website and photos will bring back some memories of the lovely times we shared together.
Talking as to how come I had so many overseas friends being a local on the Island. I guess fortunately because I participated in all types of sport and social life, I was fortunate to meet up with visitors, mostly all wanting to enjoy diving and spear fishing, water skiing, picnics to our various small sand banks and islands around us and of course socialising - beach parties under the blue skies and not forgetting fishing which was also most popular.
Due to my experience with spear-fishing, during our time we called goggling, most tourists visiting the island were introduced to me where I became I guess an unofficial guide and as many visitors were associated with some of the English families connected to our Local Government living in Zanzibar, when their friends, relatives or children visited the island, I was always asked to assist teaching them to spear fish or learn to water skii and this is how I made unlimited friends. (Please read my two stories which will follow soon titled 'Zanzibar a Gogglers Paradise' & 'My Miriculous Escapes'.
Below are photographs I am sharing with you all and if you do see them, please call and say hi. I now reside in the UK and can be contacted on my email: bennydesouza@btinternet.com
For those I have lost contact, many American friends from Project Mercury Tracking Station in Zanzibar, all our Englisg friends from Cable & Wireless, my great Italian friends and friends from the Middle East. Hope we do meet someday.
With love and best regards
Benny
Introducing Juliet Vernede above who visited Zanzibar with her good friend Margaret Caistor.
Juliet's uncle Brian Kendall was the Financial Adviser to the
Local Government in Zanzibar.
Juliet took a keen interest in spear-fishing, water skiing and table tennis. Both Juliet and Margaret were very friendly with all
our local community and were liked by everyone on the Island.
It was Juliet who kindly arranged my Work Permit to come to
the UK for which I am most grateful and will never forget.
We still remain great family friends and visit each other on a
regular basis. Click on the link below.
TAIMUR & Benito - Mini Reunion in Zanzibar May 2013
Dear Taimur & Local Reunion Party - Zanzibar
It was wonderful meeting up just a couple of days ago which brought back lovely memories of our good old (young) days on our Paradise Island Zanzibar where we were just one big happy family.
I certainly enjoyed meeting up with your friends where we all shared some good laughs talking about almost everything.
As a token of remembrance of my short visit, here are some photographs which I appreciate if you could forward to your friends.
I have been fortunate to also meet a few good old friends who remembered me and how I will never know. Walking down the street I was greeted by a strong voice 'Benito' - what a pleasant surprise. We Zanzibar folks can never forget one another and you do not know what joy it brings when I meet folks from Paradise Island Zanzibar.
Until we meet again. Best regards to one and all.
